Ben Lu’s practice focuses on patent prosecution and client counseling in the areas of biological and chemical sciences.
He has prosecuted hundreds of biotechnology/pharma patent applications in the U.S. and abroad. Also, he consults clients, mostly Asia startups, helping them develop IP strategies and portfolio, and preparing IP license agreements.
Prior to joining NKL Law, Dr. Lu had worked at IP law firms in Boston and in Northern Virginia, representing many pharmaceutical and biotech companies in procuring IP. Prior to his legal career, Dr. Lu worked for more than a decade at large pharmaceutical companies including Pfizer, Monsanto, and Johnson & Johnson. Dr. Lu has extensive research experience spanning areas from synthetic chemistry and molecular biology to genomics and bioinformatics and their applications, e.g., in personalized diagnostics. During his graduate study at UCLA, he authored dozens of scientific articles published in prestigious peer-reviewed journals, including Nature and Cell.
Dr. Lu has also extensive scientific and legal experience with small molecule drugs and their development, including preparing patentability and freedom-to-operate opinions and patent applications related to this drug category.
