Seong Don Hwang has extensive experiences in IP litigation, licensing and patent prosecution matters. Moreover, he has numerous experiences including patent portfolio acquisition and strategic planning consultations. Currently, his main practice includes patent litigation and patent prosecution matters.
Dr. Hwang is technically focused on the electrical art especially including semiconductor, display and optical devices. He obtained his J.D. from DePaul University, College of Law after he worked at Samsung Electronics, Co., Ltd. as an engineer developing flash memory devices. He also obtained his M.S. and Ph. D. from Syracuse University in Solid State Science and Technology.
Dr. Hwang worked at numerous companies as an In-house/General Counsel including Samsung SDI Co., Ltd., LMS Co., Ltd., and GenID Co., Ltd. In his position, he handled extensive IP matters including patent litigations, patent prosecutions and patent acquisitions. More specifically, he handled IP relating to PDP; OLED; LCD; Optics and DNA Sequencing technologies.
Dr. Hwang was also a Senior Foreign Legal Consultant for Shin & Kim, one of the biggest law firms in Korea. In Shin & Kim, he provided consultation to Korea base IT companies as to the US patent litigation practice including the District Court and 337 investigations at the ITC proceedings. He also handled US patent prosecution matters as well.
Dr. Hwang also worked as a sole practitioner. He handled an appellate case at the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit appealed from the Patent and Trademark Appeal Board.
Dr. Hwang taught for 9 years at the Seoul National University as an Adjunct Professor. He taught “US ITC Litigation Strategy” and “International Patent Litigation Strategy” courses for an IP graduate program in the IP LLM Program, Department of Law.
